Oh yeah, I used this technique in an unreleased demo back in 2010 already. This can do VWF but also wireframe graphics and other animations. I did this to make a text with moving letters (but more than 8 per line - hence they couldn't be made with sprites).

The tile squishing to a 1:8 can be done with $2006 writes only since it doesn't require scrolling to lines 4-7 of each tiles.
